Post by kingo on Thu 5 Nov - 2:24

well done to all who fished the third leg, 194 fish were caught in total, and the 4th leg in cheekpoint should be as good. the last senior comp was won with 40 yes 40 plus fish. baits will be crab ,lug and mackerel to tip off with, make sure you have enough bait for the 4 hours, frozen crab is better that having no crab, and can work as well if the fish are in ,and have plenty of lug as well, those with the best bait and enough of it will have a advantage on the day, so if you want to make the team put in the effort to get your bait right, target fish will be cod , flounders, eel and small coalfish and the odd bass , traces will be 3 hook flapper or clipped down, hook size 4 to 1o depending on fish, main line 15 pound to 25 pound line , have one reel loaded with each and conditions will deciede which one to choose on the day, good luck to everyone and those who put in the most effort will have the most successs. kingo

yeah lads super fishing on the slob last weekend. as kingo said crab and lug needed for next leg fish was great last week down there and ye could be changing baits every five to ten mins so loads of bait needed. make sure ye have good shockleader and a new knot on it as in places it can be very snaggy.keep trying dif distances as over the tide the fish will move.best of luck to all.

Hi all, in my last comment i said that eels would be one of the target fish in cheekpoint, that may not be the case, as philip has said that there is now a total ban on the catching of eels and that we will not be allowed to measure any that are caught. We are checking this out with the Fishery board, or if any one has more info on it that would be great, We know that an appeal has gone to the EEC, and will let everyone know the ruling before the competition starts. kingo.

I would think eels should be the same as Bass once they are released back again you should be able to measure them and use the score.
They are going to be caught anyhow no way around that we had the same debate when the Bass ban came in .

Have to agree with Admin, I would think that there will be no way of avoiding the catching of eels so as all the competitions are run on a catch and release basis there will be no problem with the measuring of them, BUT we will wait for direction from on high.

Commercial Eel Fishing nothing here to stop catch and release

Post by Admin on Thu 12 Nov - 13:36

Commercial fishing Ľ
Commercial Eel Fishing
Bye-laws 2009

Eel fishing is closed until 2012. The prospect of re-opening the eel fishery will be considered at that time, following a review of the data collated as a result of scientific sampling provided for in the draft plan.

* Bye-law No C.S. 303, 2009 prohibits fishing for eel, or possessing or selling eel caught in a Fishery District in the State until June 2012.
* Bye-Law No 858, 2009 prohibits the issue of eel fishing licences by the regional fisheries boards in any Fishery District.

Eel management Plan
Background

Scientific research, conducted by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES)This link will open in a new window, has indicated that the European eel fish stock is so depleted that it is now outside safe biological limits. The ICES advised that a recovery plan be developed for the whole stock of European eel and that exploitation and other human activities affecting the fishery be reduced as much as possible. The EU brought forward Council Regulation 1100/2007This link will open in a new window, establishing measures for the recovery of the stock of European eel.
The Irish fishery

The Irish eel fishery harvests approximately 100 tonnes per annum and there are some 150 fishermen who hold a maximum of 295 licences, not all of which are actively fished. Catches have been declining over recent years because of the status of stocks. Eel fishing is not a full time occupation and it is restricted depending on the type of fish being targeted. The Irish fishery harvest is less than 2% of the European harvest.
Eel Management Plans

Under Council Regulation 1100/2007 This link will open in a new window an Eel Management Plan (EMP) must be prepared by all Member States for implementation from 1 July 2009. The objective of each EMP is to reduce anthropogenic mortalities to achieve a target escapement of adult eel equivalent to 40% of biomass.

A Joint Working Group was established in 2008 to prepare Irelandís national eel management plan and to develop an eel management plan, on a river basin district basis, as required by the EC Regulation.

A public consultation exercise was also undertaken in September 2008. All Regional Fisheries Boards held presentations to which eel fishermen were invited as part of this process. Some 16 submissions were received in response (the majority from eel fishermen). All of these were considered by the Joint Working Group.

The draft Eel Management Plan for Ireland has been submitted to the European Commission. Given the implications of the scientific and management advice, the absolute necessity to conserve remaining stocks and the obligation to contribute to the recovery of stocks in the shortest time possible, four main Management Actions aimed at reducing eel mortality and increasing silver eel escapement in Irish waters are recommended in the draft Eel Management Plan.

These are:

* an immediate cessation of the commercial eel fishery and closure of the market,
* mitigation of the impact of hydropower, including a comprehensive silver eel trap and transport plan,
* ensuring upstream migration of juvenile eel at barriers and
* the improvement of water quality in eel habitats.

Once approved by the Commission the Eel Management Plan must be implemented from 1 July 2009. It will take many years to achieve recovery of stocks to historical levels. An evaluation of the eel stock and management measures will be undertaken every 3 years until 2018 and every 6 years there after. For the foreseeable future, management of the fishery will focus on conservation.

Hi James,

We had a similar query in regarding bass caught in a competition during the closed season.
The answer is that no points should be awarded for eels in your competition.
While we are sure that they will all be returned and we commend your catch & release policy,
we canít allow a competition where catching of eels is rewarded in any way, even if just to get points for a kids
competition. This may seem harsh, but it is the only way to enforce the law across the board.

P.S. We got a cod survey card from yourselves sent in the post and we would like to thank your club for
continuing to fill them out.

Regards,

Shane

hi all, just to put everyone on the same level and to avoid any misunderstanding for the last leg, any eel caught will not be measured and will not be recorded on the score card, so YES eel's will be banned on the day. we have no choice on this as it is a new law that has been brought in. Everyone will be informed of this before the draw for pegs so there will be no misunderstanding before the competition starts. Kingo
