Niall, You can use a multiplier rod with a fixed spool reel normally without much problems but not the other way around. A universal rod should be fine.
The difference is that a multiplier rod holds the line off the blank but there aren't enough rings on a fixed spool rod to keep the line from touching a bent blank.
Fixed spool rods normally have larger eyes.

why you looking to know is it that your buying a new rod?you can and i have used a fixed spool on a multiplier rod, but it does effect its preformance.if your looking into buying take into account what you are more comfortably with and you use the most>

Rod and Reel

Post by dogfish on Mon 15 Sep - 17:28

Fixed spools have come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years and can cast as far as Mulipliers if you are use to fix spools at the moment stick to it for the time been the Gruvelle Zeus is a great casting reel Simon has hit 190m with his but if you are going to go down the road of buying a muliplier get some instruction in how to use it and then see how you feel any of the seniors will give you a few casts of their rod and reel if you want a go contact me (PM) and i will arrange to give you a few casts .
