THE Chairman of Courtown Sea Angling Association, has blasted as 'ludicrous' proposals to ban fishing off Courtown and Cahore piers, without prior permission of the Harbour Master who isn't even based in Courtown.
Joe Byrne, who is also a member of the Leinster Council of Sea Angling, was outraged to discover that new draft bye-laws governing harbours around the county, are seeking to control who fishes off the local piers.

'People have been coming to Courtown for years, and fish off the piers three or four nights during their holiday,' he said. 'This would stop them coming here. You have people who can't get down to the beach to fish. There's a huge social aspect to this. People go down in their cars and chat to the anglers.'

'Not allowing people down on the pier to fish would be ludicrous,' he added. 'I could name lots of people who go down to fish as a social thing. They don't even care if they catch anything. This is doing away with people's rights to enjoy a natural amenity.'

He said the Harbour Master for Wexford has deputies who visit Courtown regularly.

'I'm calling on our Councillors not to pass this aspect of the bye-laws,' he added. 'Thousands of people go down during the summer to fish.'

He said the bye-law would lead to people being charged for permits to fish, and holiday makers wouldn't want to apply for these.

He plans to bring the matter up at the Leinster Council AGM and to encourage clubs at all the affected harbours to lobby their Councillors before they vote on it next month.
