Dear Competitor.
Waterville Shore Angling Club would like to welcome you to their “2-Day Angling Festival” which will be held on Reenroe beaches in South Kerry. The event once again is sponsored by “The Bayview Hotel” Waterville which is also the HQ for the weekend. The following is offered as a guide for the weekend’s events.
Fishing will take place on Ballinskelligs beach on Saturday 26th October, fishing 17.30 – 21.30 (H/W 22.13 – 2.9m) and Reenroe beach on Sunday 27th October fishing 13.30 – 18.30 (L/W 16.25 – 1.4m). Senior entry €50 including pools - pre-book only, closing date 9pm on Thursday 24th October. Assisted and solo junior entry is €10 including pools, and there will be a separate prize list sponsored by club member and local guide John Quinlan. It is a pegged and zoned event and limited to 36 entries. Pegs will be drawn for beach positions – each peg will be 20 yards apart – and competitors must remain in these positions throughout the match. Parking on beach will be at competitors own risk.
There will be three zones, each with a maximum of 12 anglers. Each zone will have stewards located on pre-arranged pegs, fish should be placed in a container and taken to a steward for measuring and recording before the next cast is reeled in. Only live fish will be accepted. If there is any doubt about the length a second opinion can be sought and that decision will be final. Cash prizes will be awarded for zone positions. The top five over-all winners will receive a cash prize and there is also a trophy and cash prize for the longest bass recorded over the two days. This year there will be a trophy and cash prize for the combined total of biggest round and biggest flat fish over the two days, if there is no outright winner using this criteria, then the person with the best three flat fish will take the prize, if tied the longest flat fish will decide, which is sponsored by Tom Lynch. – N.B. all cash prizes depend on entry.

The festival will run on a catch, measure and release basis. – Fish points will be awarded as follows:
• ALL FISH over 20cm will receive 1 point per cm up to 40cm and 4 points per cm thereafter plus 10 fish points.
• All fish will be measured DOWN! ie: a fish of just over 36cm will be awarded 36pts plus 10 fish points to give a total of 46.
• Exceptions
Under sized fish will be awarded a total of 5 points each – a maximum of 5 under sized fish per angler will be allowed.
Subsequent under sized fish must be returned immediately.
LS Dogfish and Garfish will be awarded 40 points total. The first fish must be measured, measurement to count in case of a tie.
Bull huss between 20cm and 70cm will be awarded 40pts total and 4pts per cm thereafter.
Eels 20cm – 60cm = 25pts – total. 61cm – 80cm = 50pts – total. 81cm plus = 100pts – total.
Stingrays will be awarded an extra 10 fish points.
Tope 20cm – 70cm = 40pts - total. 71cm – 100cm = 80pts - total. 100cm plus = 150pts – total.
NB. All rays will be classed as round fish and measured across the wings.
Mackerel, sand eel, weavers and any game fish are not eligible. Bait caught scad are allowed.
NB. Flounder must have their mouths shut when being measured.

ZONE WINNERS will be the anglers with the most fish points. Zone points will be awarded as follows – Zone win = 1pt – Zone 2nd = 2pts and so on down to 12 pts for 12th position. Anyone who fails to catch will receive two points more than the number of senior anglers in the largest zone. i.e one zone has 12 anglers the other two have 11 anglers all blanks receive 14 pts.

OVER-ALL WINNERS will be the anglers with the lowest zone points total over the two days.
If there is a tie MOST FISH will decide, if there is still a tie the longest single fish will decide.

RULES I.F.S.A. rules apply except:-
• Only one rod with a maximum of three hooks can be used (doubles count as two, trebles count as three hooks). A spare rod may be assembled, but without terminal tackle attached – a quick change clip is acceptable.
• Any amount of spare traces can be prepared and baited up – artificial lures and ground baiting are permitted.
• Wading is only allowed when casting or landing and returning fish and competitors must return immediately to the beach.
• Casting in front of neighbouring anglers is not permitted. If pendulum casting, a shock leader of 60lb is recommended
• Accidentally foul hooked fish will be allowed for match purposes, but not for specimen claims.
• If traces get tangled with a fish on, the competitor whose hook is in the fish can claim it – if both angler’s hooks are in the fish, neither can claim it.
• Assistance may be given in landing a fish if the angler so wishes, but the rod must not be handed to any other angler.
• All fish will be returned alive; any damaged fish will be retained by the stewards and distributed within the community. No fish to be retained by the competitors.
• At the end of the match lines must be reeled in immediately and any fish hooked will count. Steward’s sheets should be checked and signed, as mistakes cannot and will not be rectified later. No litter to be left on the beach.

• Two pools per day will operate - split 50% - 30% - 20%. N.B: only one prize per pool per angler.
• Pool one will be for the longest round fish (excluding lesser spotted dogfish, garfish and eels. Also bull huss and tope under 71cm)
• Pool two will be for the longest flat fish.
• Junior pools, assisted and solo will operate and be separate from seniors.
• In the event of no fish being caught in any of the prize-winning positions or pools – those prizes will be drawn for.

Any complaints must be in writing and handed to the match organiser within one hour of the end of the match accompanied by €25. If the complaint is upheld the €25 will be returned, if not it will be donated to a local charity.
Anyone found cheating will be disqualified from the whole event with no refunds and will have their names printed in the angling press.
Trophies and replicas will be awarded but the perpetual trophy will remain with Waterville S.A.C – replicas to become the property of the angler.
If there are less than 36 entries cash prizes and zones will be adjusted accordingly.
If entries don’t reach the required numbers the club reserves the right to cancel the competition with a full refund.
The club also reserves the right to change venues.

Reenroe and Ballinskelligs beaches are part of Ballinskelligs bay.
Reenroe is a snag free surf beach, with little or no tide rip, although a grip lead would be advisable.
Like anywhere, fishing is unpredictable with so much depending on sea conditions – if the wind is in the east or north the sea will be flat making catching difficult – the best fishing being when the surf is up – especially for bass.
Ballinskelligs beach is a sheltered bay with deeper water dotted with a few snaggy areas and buoys. The bouys are no real problem as distance casting is not necessary.
With good conditions these beaches will produce, flounder, bass, dogfish, coalfish, mullet and rays; with dogfish and coalfish coming on as daylight fades.
Bait – lug/sandeel/mackerel/razor/ragworm/maddies and crab are all likely to catch fish.
